Quotation with consequences

A speech of Pope Benedict XVI. caused a big wave of outrage in the islamic world. What did he say and what evidence does the reaction of the islamic world give?

At the beginning of 2006 the first conflict between the islamic and the western world took place, caused by some caricatures of Mohammed that were published first in Denmark and later also in some other european countries. The first reaction in the islamic world was disgraceful. Islamic groups threatend to kill the caricaturists, burned down embassies and flags. The necessary discussion about freedom of the press and about paying attention of religious feelings could only be unleashed after these shameful acts of violence.

Actually another event is heating up feelings in the islamic world. A speech about "Religion and reasoning power"of pope Benedict XVI., in which he quoted a medievil argument between a christian and an islamic theorist, restarted the conflict unintentionally. The quotation was regarded to the subtopic of "Religion and Violence". Within this argument the christian theorist doubted that the islamic religion brought positive reforms and insinuated that Islam is spread out by violence. Even though this quotation was not meant to be the popes own opinion, this again caused a storm of outrage in the islamic world. While not looking at the popes intention, which was to show that religion and violence should have nothing in common and that the way of acting should be reasonable, and likewise not caring about the summons of Benedict to work for a dialogue between the religions, the speech had serious consequences.

Burning churches in Nablus, threats of killing the pope and destroying the Vatican by islamic terrorist groups or comparisons between Benedict XVI. and Hitler by a turkish politician were only some of these consequences. What evidence do these reactions give? Don't these reactions give a justification to the quotation? The radical islamic groups condemn a quotation, which words they are practicing at the same time. It is a kind of satiric performance when the islamic world seems to say "who doubts Islam is a peaceful religion will be threatend or, even worse, killed". Where is the necessary reaction to these obvious insults of the islamic religion and its prophet, carried out by islamofascists. No word about it. If Islam really wants to be taken serious and if it really wants to be part of a dialogue, islamic believers all across the globe have to enter into debate about the quotation and finally ask themselves why the islamic religion is an indespensible part of a speech about "Religion and violence."
